Smart Clerk has received positive feedback from customers, who appreciate its accuracy in processing bank statements, user-friendly interface, and time-saving automation. However, there have been some concerns raised about limited data privacy options and minor UI issues. Overall, Smart Clerk seems to be a solid choice for those seeking an AI bookkeeping tool, especially with the added benefit of a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Impressive Financial Tool with Limited Data Privacy Options

This is an excellent tool for converting credit card and bank statements (PDF) into Excel format. Out of all the similar products I've tried, this one works the best—it captures everything accurately. It also provides a comprehensive overview of your financial health by automatically categorizing transactions into income, expenses, and more. It essentially functions like a Mint dashboard, but for your uploaded PDF statements.

That said, the main drawback is the lack of user-facing privacy controls. Although the developer mentions in 'Questions' that users have the right to be forgotten and can close their accounts, there’s currently no built-in option in the dashboard to delete or terminate your account. It appears you have to request this manually via email.

Also concerning is the permanence of uploaded data. Once a PDF is processed, the original files remain in the system indefinitely with no way for users to delete them. Items are not removable from sections like Vendors and Reconciliation, and there's no user control over data retention. This raises red flags about data security—especially in an era when even major companies face data breaches, as we’ve seen with the recent 23andMe bankruptcy issue. While they claim GDPR compliance, it’s unclear why PDF files need to be retained after processing. If there's no option for users to delete their own files, one has to wonder whether the data is being kept for purposes such as training AI models. As of this writing, there's no mention of such usage in their privacy policies or terms.

Feature Request:
It would be incredibly useful to have a "lite" mode—an option to simply convert PDF statements to Excel files without populating dashboards, vendor lists, or transaction categories. Many users, especially those who still rely on Quicken for tax preparation and bookkeeping, need nothing more than a fast and accurate conversion tool. Adding such a feature could greatly expand the tool’s appeal and user base.

Bottom line: despite its privacy concerns, this tool is a hidden gem and well worth purchasing for its core functionality. I sincerely urge the developers to implement more robust data control options—not only for user protection but also to safeguard their own platform. History has shown how a single breach can undermine even the most trusted names in the industry.

Well ahead of competition

I have tried similar tools through free trials, and the initial results of Smart Clerk were really impressive. Extracting data from bank statements is already a cool idea, and Smart Clerk does it really well.

The UI is super clean and simple, although the dashboard could be a bit more detailed and customizable.

If Smart Clerk manages to add the right features in the upcoming months, it could become a rising star among accounting tools.

Good for PDF Statements Only; UI Needs Work for Data Entry

Will not accept CSV transactions directly from institutions, which is the only way for me to download them from multiple accounts. Makes the product worthless for me, but I see the promise. I uploaded one PDF statement to test and it recognized transactions well, but data entry isn't fast. I click in the description to enter the payee information for a check and can't hit tab or enter to submit, I have to click a plus. Terrible for data entry speed. Categories management requires one category added at a time make chart of accounts setup VERY time consuming.

Thank you for your review! Your suggestion regarding the user interface is very valid, and we have already incorporated those improvements into our next release.

As for data import, we currently only support bank and credit card statements, with direct bank integration to follow. Unfortunately, CSV import is not in our roadmap, as we are focusing on achieving simplicity through drag-and-drop...

Excellent Product with Room to Strengthen Data Trust

I recently purchased Smart Clerk and used it to analyze my credit card statements — and I was seriously impressed. It delivered insights in seconds, with remarkable accuracy. The functionality is top-notch, and it saved me a ton of time. For entrepreneurs and small business owners juggling multiple responsibilities, this is a game-changer.

It’s easy to imagine a tool like this gaining serious traction and even attracting attention from companies like Intuit or other major financial players. The team deserves a big congratulations for building something so useful and innovative.

As the product continues to grow, I’d love to see more clarity and communication around data security. Given that users are uploading highly sensitive financial information, things like a more robust privacy policy, two-factor authentication, and specifics about cloud storage partners would go a long way in building additional confidence.

I understand the company is based in Europe and adheres to GDPR, which is a great foundation. But as a user, it would be reassuring to know exactly how and where the data is stored, and what measures are in place to protect it. Even a short section on the website with this kind of transparency would be a huge value-add.

That said, I’m rooting for the Smart Clerk team. This is an incredibly promising product, and with a few small updates to security and communication, it has the potential to become a go-to tool for thousands of businesses. Keep up the great work!

Thank you very much for your kind words and for highlighting the importance of data security.

While we have very strict data security policies in place, we recognize that communicating this more openly to our users will be a priority in the coming weeks. These topics can sometimes be too technical, but we assure all our users that Smart Clerk was built with data privacy in mind from day one.

Too much bug and too little settings to fix the bugs.

I recently purchased your subscription and have encountered a few issues that I am unable to resolve on my end. Below is a list of the problems I’ve noticed:
1. My income/revenue does not appear in the report. -> When I change the vendor name, the system changed the date automatically to the previous year.
2. When I upload my credit card statement, it gets split into two accounts. -> They gave me one more statement to upload to cover the incident, however, I still want the to be one, this due I have two credit cards in one account, and they split it into two, I also can't fix or rename the statement. My other account name was N/A.
3. I am unable to view my support tickets. -> I only can read after the tickets was replied.
4. Uploaded statements are being misread—for example, a value of Rp270,000 is displayed as Rp270. -> CS said the AI will look into my algorithm for statements and improve the accuracy over time, I can't review the improvement made by the AI knowledge base for my account as the access is limited not for the user.

The potential is great, I'd love the simplicity, just hoping that they can fix the issue promptly, thanks!

Edited. I provided the answer to my bug above.
The review was an honest assessment, not intended to pressure the support ticket.
1. If a customer did not receive a support ticket summary after send to the company is a significant flaw in the system. Relying solely on the company without issuing a ticket for the customer creates confusion, especially when we don't know if the support ticket has been issued or how we can maintain if missed on our email.
1. A bug is a bug, whether the company acknowledges it or not. Having restricted access to edit and fix settings is a major drawback. Claiming the system improves accuracy without informing users is problematic. Users cannot determine whether the AI makes the right decisions without human oversight.

Again the review I made is for the good to the Company as sumo-lings is also benefited to the product. Hope you can improve the good job of your work, not just pressuring the customer support. Thank you.

We appreciate your review, but it appears to have an intention to expedite existing support tickets.

While we value everyone’s opinions and experiences with Smart Clerk, we believe that using low-rated reviews to pressure our customer support team is not the kindest behavior we expect from Sumo-lings.
