It's based on the widely popular open-source G7 firewall. It uses several hundred rules spread across 11 modules so that you can fine-tune it based on your needs. I haven't had a chance to look at Wordfences code to see how it works, but I hope the end result is the same for both plugins - they keep the bad stuff away from the site :)
